ABOUT RTS LIME CONSERVATION
Background and History
RTS Lime Conservation Company is located in Cardigan, West Wales. Specialising in Conserving our Historic Buildings.
We have years of experience in using traditional methods and in depth knowledge of the different materials required to restore old buildings. We use simple and effective techniques which will result in both a breathable and highly sustainable finish. This finish can be matched to the existing, or discussions can be held to achieve the most desirable finish giving the most effective results.
The lime plastering services that we offer are the standard lime NHL or a lime putty and horse hair 3 coat finish, usually carried out internally, on the exterior of the property we offer again a lime render, lime pointing, or a harling (roughcast) finish.
We usually recommend these all being finished with a limewash or a similar mineral paint, pigments can be added for a chosen colour.
All of our external work is finished with a natural hydraulic lime which gives more protection to the elements.
We aim to use locally sourced materials which are best suited to the property and existing materials used. We always like to have good communication with you the client or architect to ensure that we achieve the best outcome.
We are based in Ceredigion, but also cover Pembrokeshire, and Carmarthenshire.
All our plasterers carry the CSCS Gold card in Heritage Plastering (NVQ Level 3)
SO WHY CHOOSE LIME?
Approximately 60% of houses in Wales are of a solid stone construction built with a lime mortar. Built from local stone and lime, the outcome of these buildings were to function as a “breathable”structure in their local environment.
Many of these original solid stone buildings had an external lime render and limewash applied, over many years this has been removed and replaced with cement based renders and plastic paints.
Similarly on the interior the lime plaster has been removed and has been replaced by a “Pink” or "Skim" plaster which is a non breathing gypsum plaster.
Which over time tend to crack and blow easily which leads to water ingress. So any water finding its way into a wall works its way through the wall and can’t escape until it finds a weakness in the internal plaster /mortar, causing damp and mould issues.
